Our New Target Is Green
Target To Open Sustainability Focused Superstore in Columbus, Ohio
MINNEAPOLIS (March 27, 2024) – Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT) today unveiled plans for the company’s first-ever sustainability-focused superstore. From the physical features of the building to the products the store is stocked with, this Target will be truly sustainable from the inside out. Opening in 2025 and located in Columbus, Ohio, the store will celebrate the company meeting the first set of goals outlined in the Target Forward initiative that puts the company on track to being carbon neutral by 2040.
The first thing customers will notice is that the building is embellished with a “green” Target logo, a nod to what’s in store. Customers will also see a parking lot fitted with carport solar panels that provide both shade and clean electricity. However, the most important features are embedded within the walls. With features like an electric (not natural gas) powered HVAC system, sustainability will be quite literally in the air.
But the promise of sustainability really begins when shoppers walk inside – where environmentally friendly products aren’t shoved into the back corner; they are front and center. In fact, there won’t be a single unsustainable product in sight. All the products in this store meet Target’s established sustainability standards. These include products from Target’s sustainability-forward brands like Universal Thread and Everspring.
The store will also feature a first-of-its-kind household essentials refill center. Here, customers can purchase their own refillable containers, fill them up with everyday staples, and take them home. Then, when they are running low, they can bring their container back to the store and refill them again and again. By doing so, customers are not only saving the environment from harmful and wasteful disposable containers, but they will also save money over time.
“Our new store is redefining the shopping experience with sustainability at its core,” said Amanda Nusz, senior vice president of corporate responsibility for Target. “We hope to empower customers to live a sustainable life with quality and environmentally friendly products at low prices.”
Columbus was picked as the city for this store due to the ambitious climate goals set forth by the Sustainable Columbus initiative. By 2030, the City of Columbus hopes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45%, directly aligning with Target’s goal of powering all its stores with renewable energy by that same year. Target will also be donating 5% of the store’s profits in the form of grants for sustainability initiatives in the city.
“We are honored that Target chose the City of Columbus for this revolutionary store,” said Alana Shockey, deputy director of Sustainable Columbus. “Our partnership will help deliver our mutual promise of sustainability to the residents of Columbus.”
The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on Earth Day – April 22, 2024. More details will be available closer to the event.
